Skullhead
History
Starting out in 1984 in the rough town of Consett, north-east England as Skullhead UK as an Oi! band singing patriotic lyrics. The band founder Kevin Turner later said in 1987 that he started the band as a reaction to the murder of a close friend, Peter Mathewson. The band soon dropped the UK and became Skullhead.
In 1985 the band joined the National Front’s (N.F.) White Noise Club (W.N.C.) and became a major Rock Against Communism (R.A.C.) band. When the first album White Warrior was released in 1987 many other British RAC bands had left the NF White Noise Club and had joined the independently run Blood & Honour organisation. Kev and the band remained true to the WNC till the very end.
With elements of Oi!, rock n’ roll, and heavy metal, their sound was very unique for the time and culture. Their lyrics were not openly racist and didnt have overt national socialist lyrics, they sang about the pride of being British, about the Nordic gods and against capitalism and communism. They described their views as Third Position.
The line up in 1988 was Kev Turner vocals, Tim Ward on guitar, Nick Shaw on drums, and Spin “Geordie” Browne (Crashed Out) on bass. After releasing two albums Odin’s Law in 1989 and Cry of Pain in 1991 the band dissolved.
After becoming inactive in the white power skinhead scene, Kev Turner became a tattoo artist and covered his “political” tattoos over. He became known as a techno music MC under the name MC Techno T in the mid-1990’s and has more recently become a Buddist and reiki ‘healer’.
In 2002 Kev Turner and a new band lineup of Skullhead did however release the album Return to Thunder at which many hoped to see the band return fully to playing live RAC gigs. They did a brief concert tour of Germany, Switzerland, and Slovakia. Nevertheless the band were not skinheads and Kev Turner stated the band was nothing more than a patriotic rock band and music was more important than politics. Many saw this as a money-making pseudo return.
The bands forth album was an unofficial release of no new material under the band name Ragnarok. Originally there was a Skullhead release called Victory Or Valhalla which was itself a 1994 5-track EP. For some reason ISD Records unofficially released this CD album featuring those original 5 tracks followed by various tracks from Skullhead under the name Ragnarok. There was no new material recorded, just singles and demos added to make up a CD.
